Reaching the disabled in North Dakota

Helped by an LCEF loan, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, a mission congregation in Bismarck, N.D., opened its doors to the community this past summer in a former retail store. Members are making good use of the space and members are actively reaching out to the developmentally disabled with its Faith and Friends weekly service. It is also a ministry partner to Bethesda Lutheran Communities, with the goal of providing a Lutheran, faith-based group home for people with the disabilities.

New Church Carries on 100-Year Tradition

The congregation of Immanuel Lutheran, Wentzville, Mo., had outgrown its church building and had been worshipping in the school’s multipurpose room for several years. With a generous gift of land in an area along a major road and in close proximity to one of the local school district’s major campuses, the congregation constructed a new church. The new facility was dedicated in August. Immanuel used an LCEF loan to help keep its 100-year history going forward and continuing to touch people in its community.

Message For the Ages Carried Out in Building Project

Inscribed above the arch at the entrance to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lebanon, Conn., is “Glory to God in the Highest” in German. The congregation reiterates the message, but now in a much larger facility across the street from the original church.

Committed to the project, congregation members pledged money and time to construct the building, and were assisted by an LCEF loan, a fellow Lutheran who managed the project, and Laborers For Christ member Bernie Gueldner. Despite setbacks, the project was completed for nearly half the original budget thanks to this help and many prayers.

Design Expresses Congregation’s Purpose

The congregation at St. John, Kimball, Minn., used Capital Funding Services and an LCEF loan to build a new contemporary country church. There were two characteristics of St. John’s ministry that members wished to be carried out in the design: a passion for the cross and a desire to build relationships with Jesus Christ and each other. The interior and exterior windows were designed to create a central alignment between the front door and the altar and draw people to the cross. The shape of the sanctuary windows and ceiling also leads one to the cross, and natural light shines on one’s path to the altar. This new structure reminds congregation members of their purpose every time they enter.

Hazard Church Gets a Helping Hand

The congregation of Faith Lutheran Church, Hazard, Neb., is remodeling a former school building located across the street from the church into a fellowship hall, something it currently does not have. Laborers For Christ is working for the congregation to help defray the costs of the project.

The joyous part is the number of volunteers that are taking part and working together, determined to create a place the community as well as the congregation can gather. Hazard is a rural community with around 66 residents, but the Faith congregation has about 160 worshippers.

RCW Housing Loan Program Impacted by Legislation

The passing of the Secure and Fair Enforcement Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (also known as the SAFE Act) has caused changes to LCEF’s rostered church worker (RCW) residential and home equity loan program. Because of new regulations, excessive requirements, and increased fees to the organization, LCEF is able to accept residential loan applications in 16 states. (At this time, this does not impact the consolidation loan program and the 47 states in that program.)

Joyful Response® LCEF's Free Stewardship Service

If a significant share of your congregation members is still placing cash and checks into the offering plate, your church may be missing valuable offerings when families leave town for holidays and vacations. Now is the time to offer your members an electronic stewardship opportunity that provides an automated way to fulfill their financial stewardship commitments. LCEF's Joyful Response® is a free stewardship service for LCMS organizations, allowing members to share their financial blessings conveniently and predictably through electronic deposit of their offerings.

Partners Provide Funds, Steeples, Lutheran Symbols

With a church renovation or new construction project, there is a long list of details. For help with everything from start (campaign readiness study) to finish (furnishing the altar and worship space), Concordia Publishing House (CPH) and LCEF are your partners for creating the space needed and reverent atmosphere expected. See the CPH Church Renovations Web site, or the loan or Ministry Services areas of LCEF’s Web site to find out about all of the resources we have to offer your congregation.

Post-Construction Tip: Be Ready for More Outreach in New Ministry Space

Laborers For Christ can bring your members together in worship and volunteerism, and very often their witnessing mobilizes congregations to accomplish more outreach once construction is complete. Be ready by reviewing your supplies and furnishings; go to the CPH Church Renovations Web site for pew accessories, offering plates, new altar adornments, etc.

During a chilly day last November, members of Christ Lutheran in Shakopee installed playground equipment for their new preschool, Christ’s Kids, to open in September of 2007.

Christ’s Kids Preschool, Shakopee—Your LCEF Investments at Work

LCEF investors have helped fund a new preschool ministry in Shakopee (a southwest suburb of the Twin Cities) via a jump start loan to help with expenses over the first three years.

“Christ’s Kids Preschool plans to reach out to our community with the Good News of Jesus Christ,” said Pastor John Grohs of Christ Lutheran. “The Disciples of Christ Lutheran have been looking for ways to reach the community and are excited to move forward. Our community is growing and many new families are moving into the area. This is a way we can reach out and meet some community needs. Our main mission is pointed outside of our congregation to unchurched families, in addition to serving the children already in our church. Juanita Krueger will be installed as Director/Teacher sometime after the first of the year, as we continue to ready our facility for this preschool.”
